WASHINGTON, DC, January 16, 2002 – The American Advertising Federation (AAF), as administrator of the Advertising Hall of Fame, the industry's greatest honor for lifetime achievement in advertising, is proud to announce the election of four new industry innovators:

  • Katharine Graham, former chairman & CEO, The Washington Post Company (posthumously), builder of a major diversified media company and the first women to serve as the head of a Fortune 500 company and as a director of the Associated Press
  • Charles D. Peebler Jr., chairman emeritus, True North Communications, illustrious and dedicated architect of communications industry powerhouses and major innovator in the field of the advertising
  • Hal Riney, chairman & CEO, Publicis & Hal Riney, known as San Francisco's "father of advertising" and as the driving force in establishing the advertising industry in that city and beyond
  • John Smale, retired chairman & CEO, The Procter & Gamble Company, former chairman, General Motors Corporation, major proponent of the power of advertising to build brands and advocate of building global brand loyalty through advertising.

The recipients will be officially inducted into the prestigious Advertising Hall of Fame at an awards luncheon and ceremony March 19 at New York's Waldorf=Astoria hotel.

"When one looks to the master builders of this dynamic and robust industry, the names of these four innovators come to the top of the list," said AAF President and CEO Wally Snyder. "Through their groundbreaking and innovative approaches to this industry, Katharine Graham, Charles D. Peebler, Hal Riney and John Smale have made an immeasurable impact upon the past, present and future of advertising."

The Advertising Hall of Fame began in 1948, and since then 157 men and women, including this year's awardees, have been elected to this illustrious group. They include such industry giants as Reginald Brack, Leo Burnett, Jay Chiat, Ray Kroc, David Ogilvy, William Paley, Harley Procter, John Wanamaker, and Mary Wells Lawrence. These awards are the most prestigious in the industry honoring those individuals who have set the standard for advertising executives.

The Council of Judges chaired by Tom Curley, president & publisher, USA TODAY, selected this year's recipients from among 36 candidates. An entire list of the Council of Judges is attached. The awards ceremony will take place March 19, 2002, at The Waldorf=Astoria hotel in New York City.
