Mary Wells Lawrence, Stanley Marcus, and Bernard Flanagan Elected to AAF's Advertising Hall of Fame

WASHINGTON, DC, December 20, 1999 – The American Advertising Federation (AAF) has named three industry giants to its Advertising Hall of Fame, the industry's greatest honor for lifetime achievement in advertising.

The newest members of the Advertising Hall of Fame are:

  • Mary Wells Lawrence, founder of Wells Rich Greene and the force behind one of the most creative shops in the history of advertising
  • Stanley Marcus, chairman emeritus, Neiman Marcus and one of the most important figures in the history of retail marketing
  • Bernard Flanagan, former corporate vice president, marketing and advertising for Dow Jones and an advertising pioneer and leader for 40 years

The recipients will be officially inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame at an awards luncheon and ceremony March 21 at New York's Waldorf=Astoria Hotel.

"Mary Wells, Stanley Marcus, and Bernie Flanagan broke the rules to create new models for advertising in much the same way a new generation is setting new standards today," said AAF President and CEO Wally Snyder. "They were champions for ideas that were bolder, more adventurous and more effective than anything that had been done before, and in the process, they changed advertising for the better."

Only 149 advertising leaders have been inducted into AAF's Advertising Hall of Fame (including this year's nominees) over the past 51 years. They include luminaries like David Ogilvy, John Wanamaker, Leo Burnett, Raymond Rubicam, and recently Jay Chiat (Chiat/Day) and Joyce C. Hall (Hallmark Cards).

This year's recipients were selected from among 30 candidates by a Council of Judges chaired by CarloVittorini, CEO and publisher, Parade Publications. Andrea Alstrup, vice president of advertising for Johnson & Johnson, served as vice chair.
