Chairman Emeritus, J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT)
Burt Manning’s illustrious career spans more than 30 years and culminates in his run of more than 10 years as the chairman and CEO of J. Walter Thompson, one of the world’s most powerful and highly regarded agencies. Manning is known for his dedication and his ability to formulate exceptional creative strategies. He began his association with JWT in 1967, and his contributions include a series of critical business turnarounds that returned JWT to a position of strength, stability and leadership as a worldwide agency.
On becoming the CEO of JWT USA, Manning improved both the creative performance and the creative reputation of the agency. During Manning’s tenure, JWT won more awards for advertising effectiveness than any other company. The turnaround was so complete that ADWEEK named JWT USA the 1983 agency of the year. Manning went on to become a partner at Jordan, Manning, Case, Taylor and McGrath, but when JWT experienced a period of turmoil, Manning returned as chairman and CEO of worldwide operations.
Throughout his career, Manning was the architect of many great advertising campaigns. His slogan, “When you’re out of Schlitz, you’re out of beer,” remains famous.
Burt Manning also made outstanding contributions to society. He was part of the initial task force that created the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. He headed the creative committee of the American Association of Advertising Agencies and served as chair, was the first chairman of the Creative Excellence in Black Advertising awards and served as a director of the Advertising Educational Foundation and the American Advertising Federation.
